5 Day Northern Laos Trekking Adventure Tour

5 Day Northern Laos Trekking Adventure Tour

Take a 5 Day Laos adventure tour departing from Luang Prabang to journey up into the northern jungles. Experience jungle river cruises and pristine Laos trekking and encounter remote hill tribe villages.

5 Day Northern Laos Trekking Adventure Tour

Search Google Maps for Luang Namtha, Myang Sing, Ou Dom Xai, the places visited in this Laos Trekking and Adventure Tour, and the satellite image is blanket green. Venture north of Luang Prabang and the landscape in Laos is a carpet of verdant wilderness and this Laos tour takes you into areas only very recently accessible to Laos tourism.

Travel in Laos is still so much in its infancy that most travellers to Laos continue to focus on Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane. Some are beginning to trickle down to Southern Laos to see the Mekong River 4,000 Islands while others venture to the Plain of Jars but their numbers remain relatively few.

The travel destinations featured in this Laos Northern Extremes Adventure Tour remain, at least for the time being, the reserve of the adventurer; the traveller intent on getting off the beaten path on an authentic adventure that takes you up towards the border of China and into one of the world’s last real frontiers of travel.

This is National Geographic country where ancient hill tribes and ethnic minority groups have survived in mountainous and remote isolation, conserving and maintaining their culture and lifestyle whilst surviving the “Secret War” that took place alongside the Vietnam War unbeknown to the Western populace and subsequent persecution.

If you really do want to get off the beaten path on a rainforest adventure and would like to go trekking to visit and meet the hill tribes people of Laos with names such as Ban Thabu Thai Dam (Black Thai), Thai Daeng (Red Thai), Kalom and Hmong Laos, each resplendent in their own cultural attire then this is and adventure tour and a doorway to travel Laos like no other and the opportunities for travel photography will be unsurpassed.

So let’s get a little more familiar with the places to visit in Laos that are featured in this special Laos Northern Extremes Adventure Tour.

Luang Prabang

Originally the capital of Laos, Luang Prabang sits on a peninsula formed by the confluence of the Khan and Mekong rivers. This is a former French Indochina retreat that is the spiritual heart of Laos and is drenched with Buddhism, an aura that hangs over it from the Alms giving at day break to the temples, the atmosphere and the pace of life.

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, Luang Prabang is a showcase of French Indochina architecture and Laos heritage. But a few years ago Luang Prabang was the new Kathmandu but is now being propelled onto the world travel market and hosts some of the finest Laos Luxury Hotels as well a restaurants and opportunities for adventure. No Laos Tour is complete without a visit to Luang Prabang..

Luang Namtha

Literally translated Luang Namtha means “Royal Sugar Palm” or “Royal Green River" and it is a small town in the north of Laos sandwiched between Udomxai and Muang Xinh. Although Luang Namtha is a relatively new town and visually or architecturally unremarkable, it’s most renowned export is “weaving”. The town itself materialized between 1966 to 1976 but it is what continues to surround Luang Namtha that is of real interest as far as Laos travel is concerned.

The nearby Luang Namtha National Biodiversity Conservation Area hosts one of the best preserved and most pristine monsoon rainforests remaining in Southeast Asia today and it overflows from Luang Namtha into the unprotected lands where it still remains pristine for the time being. What you should expect are beautiful landscapes, wonderful people, nature rich in biodiversity, adventure and delightful cuisine. In a nutshell Luang Namtha is a paradise for eco tourism.

Muang Sing

Muang Sing is located 2 hours north of Luang Prabang and is quietly being put on the map of Laos tourism because of its beautiful scenery, chilled-out atmosphere and, more importantly the abundance of local ethnic minority groups and hill tribes in the vicinity. These include the Hmong, Tai Dam, Akha, Tai Lue and Yao who all frequent the town to sell their wares which makes for a spectacular opportunity for travel photography.

The town of Muang Sing comprises wooden houses constructed in the ornate Tai Lue style with plenty of red dirt back streets to explore by foot or on a bicycle. The topography of both the town and surrounds is flat but distant mountains ring Muang Sing, speckled with Hill Tribe and Ethnic Minority Villages making Muang Sing an Adventure Tour destination like no other.

Udomxay or Uodomxay in Northern Laos sometimes called Muang Xai (Muang meaning “City”) is the largest city in Northern Laos and has been developed with future Laos tourism in mind which is a shame because it lacks charm and charisma as a result. But “developed” is used in the most glib context because in terms of tourism Udomxay remains fledgling and its infrastructure less than ready for mass tourism.

What it does offer as a province are incredible opportunities for Laos trekking as well as the very mysterious Plain of Jars. So be blind to the newly sprouted concrete carbuncles and embrace Udomxay for its range of outdoor activities in the forests and mountains that surround it.

5 Day Northern Laos Trekking Adventure Tour Itinerary

Laos Travel remains an adventure in all respects but the vast majority of travellers visiting Laos, a Southeast Asian country that might just as well be one vast national park, stick to a well trodden path consisting of Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane.

Some stray off the path slightly to explore the Plain of Jars in the north and Pakse and the 4,000 islands of the Mekong River in the South but very few really leave the tourist trail to explore the interior of this ancient land; its remote villages, hilltribes and customs.  The 5 Day Northern Extremes Laos Adventure Tour is as authentic as it gets but the time to do it is now . . . plans for trans-Asian railways and highways are already on the table and the Laos wilderness of today is unlikely to be conserved for tomorrow.

We collect you by car from your Luang Prabang Hotel and begin the journey to Luang Namtha stopping en route to visit remote Hill Tribe villages including the Ban Thabu Thai Dam (Black Thai) village and Ban Songja Hmong village. By lunch time you will have arrived at Oudomxay where you will also have a chance to visit Vat Santhipeab. After lunch leave Oudomxay again by car and continue to Luang Namtha and your hotel.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before visiting the Luang Namtha Museum. Then its off for a short drive to the Nam Ha National Biodiversity Conservation Area (NBCA), the Laos equivalent of a national park, which is some 2,224 square kilometers of wilderness. Begin a trek to visit a series of Hill Tribe and ethnic minority Villages including Hmong, Thai Dam, Thai Daeng (Red Thai) and Kalom. The trekking is not too demanding and anyone with an average level of fitness can easily enjoy today. Following the trek, return to Luang Namtha and your hotel by car. Dinner is at your hotel in Luang Namtha.

After breakfast at the hotel its off to Muang Sing near the Chinese boarder with Laos. On the way there is plenty of time to stop and visit various Yao (or Mien) minorities’ villages. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and spend the afternoon visiting Ikhor (or Akha) minority’s villages before returning to Muang Sing and your guest house.

Catch breakfast at the hotel before diving into the local market where hill tribes people and ethnic minorities migrate on a daily basis from the surrounding mountains to trade their produce. Return to Luang Namtha for lunch before continuing onto Oudomxay visiting Ban Lakkhammai Lanten village on the way. Having arrived at Oudomxay, check into your hotel. Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

Having toured more remote Laos by car over the last 4 days, Day 5 takes you on a river cruise to see Laos from a totally different perspective. After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, jump back into the car and drive to Ban Don Ngeum which you will get to by lunchtime. Take lunch at a local restaurant and then begin the river cruise following the Nam Ou River on its downstream course until you reach the village of Pak Ou which is also at the confluence with the Mekong River. From Pak Ou transfer to another car for the short journey back to Buddhist bathed Luang Prabang where we will drop you off at your hotel.
